Lodge Meetings
The Old Olavians' Lodge is one of over 8,600 private lodges
operating under the authority of the United Grand Lodge of England.
We meet at: Freemasons' Hall, 60 Great Queen
Street, London WC2B 5AZ
Our meetings are on the 3rd Saturdays of January, March,
May and October (Installation), and they usually start at 2:30pm.
Each meeting is followed by a Festive Board (or formal dinner)
in a private room at a nearby public house, which is usually concluded before
8:00pm.
If you are a Freemason and wish to visit, we would be
delighted to see you. We are especially keen to see Old Olavians who may
have joined Freemasonry in another lodge, and would like to meet fellow Old
Olavians in lodge. Please e-mail the
if you would like to visit.
Charities
being Supported this year by the Lodge
In common with most Lodges, the Master of the lodge (elected each year) chooses a mix of Masonic and
Non-Masonic charities to be supported, in addition to regular on-going support
to charities chosen by the members of the lodge.
Our Master this year (for Oct 2003 -
Oct 2004) has chosen the following charities:-
-
Take Heart :
A charity which raises funds for the Yorkshire Heart
Centre and the Cardiac/Thoracic and Children's units within the Leeds
General Infirmary.
-
The Royal Masonic
Benevolent Institution : This is a
masonic charity which exists to provide accommodation, especially nursing
home care, for
Freemasons and their wives or widows.
In
addition, the lodge continues to make its regular donations to the following
charities:-
Our Master last year (for Oct 2002 -
Oct 2003) chose the following charities:-
-
The
New Masonic Samaritan Fund : This is
a masonic charity which exists to provide support for sick and infirm
Freemasons, their wives, children or dependants, or the widows, children or
dependants of deceased Freemasons
-
Daisy Chain : A part of the Children's Kidney Trust, which has been
established as a distinct entity to raise funds for the development of child
care relief hospices for children suffering from kidney disease (in
particular needing dialysis).
Our previous Master (for Oct 2001 -
Oct 2002) chose the following charities:-
-
The
New Masonic Samaritan Fund : This is
a masonic charity which exists to provide support for sick and infirm
Freemasons, their wives, children or dependants, or the widows, children or
dependants of deceased Freemasons
-
The
School (St. Olave's Grammar School in Orpington, Kent) : This
is in recognition of the special link between the members of the lodge and
school.
-
The
Meningitis Trust : An
internationally recognised charity, the Meningitis Trust leads the fight
against meningitis by producing
an extensive range of information to raise awareness of the disease, funding
research into vaccines and treatment, and offering
a wide range of support for people affected by meningitis and meningococcal
septicaemia.
School Prizes sponsored
by the Lodge
The Old Olavians' Lodge, while accepting any suitable
candidate as a member, is however specifically intended to be a Lodge for Old
Olavians (including both teaching and non-teaching staff, Governors and their
employees, and their relatives).
The lodge still maintains links with the School, and in
particular has for many years sponsored the Giles Pilcher
Prize which is traditionally awarded to the School Captain.
In the year 2001-2002 our then Worshipful Master (W.Bro.
Richard White) obtained the
agreement of the School Governors and the Headmaster for the lodge to sponsor
two new prizes, to be known as the Old Olavians' Lodge
Prize for Charity or Community Work. One of these will
awarded each year to a student in the upper school and the other to a student in
the lower school - the recipients being nominated to the lodge by the Headmaster. Summer 2002 saw the first awards of these two new prizes.
In the year
2002-2003, one of our oldest Past Masters, who had first attended the School in
1928, auctioned a hand crafted Cricket Bat at our Festive Board after the
October 2002 meeting. Using this money, and after discussions with
the School, the
Lodge presented a new
School House Trophy
shield. This trophy will assist the School in
improving inter-house competition, and was presented to the first winning
House on 10th July 2003 W.Bro. Richard White, Immediate Past Master.
Lodge Regalia and Temple
pictures
Ever wondered what the inside of a Lodge
meeting room (or "Temple") looks like? Or what some of our
masonic regalia looks like?
Well, you could always come to Freemasons' Hall, 60
Great Queen Street, London (020 7831 9811) and find out ! Yes
- the building is open to the public most weekdays, and there are guided tours
available to the public. Please see the Grand Lodge web site for
more details. You will also be able to visit the library and
museum, and see various items of masonic regalia on display.
But if you can't make it in person, here are a few
pictures to give you an idea.
